Library moves forward

Progress on a public library in Buckingham County continues, according to a discussion between members of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors and the director of the Central Virginia Regional Library (CVRL) on Tuesday.

Morgan Dunnavant

District Four Supervisor Morgan Dunnavant and District Three Supervisor Don Matthews, who are members of a committee heading the library’s progress, spoke about the projected library, which will be at the former site of Dillwyn Primary School, located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 15 and 20.

Dunnavant said members of the library committee have been able to incorporate all of the programs into the space requested by CVRL Director Rick Ewing.

“It looks cost beneficial,” Dunnavant said. “We’re going to get … potentially a space that can be used for other county programs, used in recreation programs and a nice, fresh building that will last us for a good while.”

Dunnavant estimates that the architectural firm will be finished with drawing the exterior building and creating a computer-generated video of how the projected interior of the building may look by next month, when he hopes to display it to members of the board and the public for feedback.

“If everybody likes it, if it goes through, then we’ll task the board with asking for the update to the engineering contracts to throw up construction documents, if everybody likes what they see next month,” Dunnavant said.

Members of the board voted unanimously in December 2016 to authorize contract negotiations with Charlottesville-based Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates to determine whether the Dillwyn Primary School site would be suitable for a potential library.

In August, Dunnavant reported that the building had been deemed structurally sound for proposed renovations to accommodate a library.

Ewing addressed members of the public and the board during the update, saying the regional library board is set to meet Tuesday, and Ewing said he will discuss the library developments with them.

“I’ve spoken to them individually and off and on over the last few weeks, and I’m pretty confident in their acceptance and endorsement of the library,” Ewing said. “So I don’t see anything in the way of this. I like the drawings, and I like the work that Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates have done on the library.”

He said the regional library board would determine whether the CVRL endorses the library project.

Ewing said costs relating to developing the library are estimated to be approximately $1.8 million. He said this does not include the other purposes set for the former Dillwyn Primary School building, including space for community meetings and space for county activities.

Ewing thanked members of the board and the public for their support concerning the library’s development.

“Excited that the board has come this far and has a good plan,” Ewing said.

The Buckingham Branch Library is located on 1140 Main St. in Dillwyn. The branch library would move from its current location to the projected library site, Ewing said.
