Six girls from Cumberland County High School (CCHS) were recognized during the August meeting of the Cumberland County School Board for attending Virginia Girls State during this summer.
Sponsored by the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 269, the students attended the program from June 19-23 at Longwood University. According to a press release, this was the largest group of young women to attend the program in more than six years.
“Two young men, sponsored by American Legion Post 269, were recognized by the school Board for attending Boys State,” officials said in a release. “This week-long program was held at Radford University from June 19-23.”
Girls and Boys State provided the CCHS students with the opportunity to learn the processes of state government, leadership, initiative, character, cooperation, honesty, physical fitness and scholarship. The release cited all the attendees made presentations about what they had learned from attending their respective programs.
