A 26-year-old Farmville man was sentenced to life in prison by the Cumberland County Circuit Court on Tuesday in connection to the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl.
Kelly Daniel Bass, 26, will serve a life sentence on a charge of sodomy with a victim less than 13 years old. In addition, Bass will serve 40 years in jail with 20 years of the jail sentence suspended for a charge of sexual penetration with object with a victim less than 13, 20 years in jail with 10 years suspended for aggravated sexual battery with victim 13 or younger and 10 years with five years suspended for a charge of indecent act with child by parent. He was also ordered to pay $1,278 in court costs and serve 20 years of supervised probation upon his release.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) arrested Bass on March 17, 2016 and initially charged him with object sexual penetration of a child. His arrest arose from a complaint filed by the girl’s mother claiming Bass had fondled her daughter.
Neither the victim nor her mother live in Cumberland County; the alleged act took place while they were visiting the county.
At the time, CCSO Capt. Dennis Ownby said Bass and the victim were related. Ownby said deputies executed a search warrant at Bass’s home on Horsepen Road. Deputies then arrested Bass and transported him to Piedmont Regional Jail without bond.
Online court records show officials withdrew a child pornography charge Sept. 27, 2016.
Records also show the other alleged incidents took place Feb. 27 and 28, 2016.
A second charge of sodomy with a victim less than 13 was dropped during the trial.
