The Cumberland County School Board recognized Cumberland County High School (CCHS) junior Taylor Garrett for attending the Virginia Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar held at James Madison University (JMU) on June 2-4.
According to a press release, founded in 1958, the leadership conference and workshop is designed to inspire and develop a global community of youth volunteers dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.
“More than 250 high school students from across the state attended the conference and participated in group team building activities, group leadership exercises and other events,” officials said in the release.
“I had an outstanding time there. I learned a lot of things about myself and my leadership skills,” Garrett said in the release.
She also thanked sponsors for allowing her to attend what she described as a “life-changing seminar.”
Taylor is a dual-enrollment student and is in the first year of the CNA program at CCHS. The release cited her future plans are to attend JMU and major in nursing. Her ultimate goal is to become a nurse practitioner. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Garrett, of Farmville.
