Movie Night in the Park is set for Friday at 8 p.m. Buckingham Parks and Recreation sponsors this event. Girl Scout Troop 164 is collecting items at the event to support Operation Christmas Child. Donate a gift and receive free popcorn, a drink or candy. Items to donate might include school supplies, toys, personal care items — no liquids — clothing and accessories, crafts, games and a monetary gift for shipping.
The Buckingham Dillwyn Garden Club will meet Monday at the Buckingham Arts Center beginning at 10 a.m. Following the business meeting, Jonathan Fitzgerald of Special Touch Design Florist and Gifts will present and create floral arrangements based of the principles of floral design. Refreshments will be provided.
The Pegasus 4-H Horse and Pony Club is open to all youth ages 7-18 through Virginia Cooperative Extension Buckingham office. The club meets monthly, usually the first Tuesday of the month. Youth work on horse-related projects and learn how to work with horses safely and respectfully. All different riding styles and interests are welcome. You do not have to have a horse to participate; however, all members will be around horses to learn to work with them. Members will have the opportunity to participate in monthly meetings where they learn about horses either through a presentation by another club member or through hands-on activities, do presentations themselves, district horse knowledge competitions, field trips, community service projects, club leadership and district and state shows if members do have a horse or have access to a horse. Please call (434) 969-4261 for more details.
Buckingham Extension Office is offering a Reading Makes Cents workshop. Join in this fun after-school program for youth in grades 3-5 to be held in the elementary school cafeteria on Thursdays, Sept. 14, 21, 28 and Oct. 5 until 5 p.m. each day. This is similar to the popular Between the Pages program, but the books/book passages and related activities all involve learning about money — earning, spending, saving and giving. Cost is $15 and includes snack, activities and a take-home book each week. To register or for more information, call the Buckingham Extension office at (434) 969-4261.
Everyone is invited Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to the Virginia Tech Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center located at 2375 Darvills Road in Blackstone for their Family and Farm Day. In a family atmosphere, have fun while learning about Virginia’s largest and oldest industry, agriculture. Test your navigating skills in the corn maze. Express your artistic abilities with seed art and pine cone bird feeders. See cows, chickens, alpacas, sheep, goats, owls and horses. Milk a “no-kick” cow and see how bees make honey. Learn about aquaculture and catch a backyard bass. See what is made from peanuts, soybeans, corn, wheat and cotton. Admission is free and food may be purchased on the premises.
If you are a youth interested in joining a club, 4-H has a Shooting Education club focusing on the shotgun discipline. Are you an adult interested in getting your 4-H Shotgun Instructor Certification to become a club leader? If so, contact Ruth Wallace at ruwallac@vt.edu to find out more or call the Buckingham Extension Office at (434) 969-4261.
