Cumberland County High School’s varsity football team is still looking for its first win this season after falling 47-0 to host Central Lunenburg High School on Friday night.

“We’ve kind of been a Jekyll and Hyde kind of football team,” Dukes Head Coach Edgar Knapp said. “Well, Mr. Hyde showed up on Friday night. So, in all three facets of the game, we just played pretty poorly. We were flat. We came out, we took the opening kickoff, we got a couple first downs. We got a penalty, got behind the sticks, ended up almost getting another first down even after the penalty, punted, and then we never stopped them on any one drive. So, they basically scored on long drives every time we did not do well on offense.”

He noted that the Dukes were inside the Chargers’ 10-yard line twice and did not score.

“We had penalties,” he said. “The only positive that I can say about the game at this point is … that we didn’t have any turnovers for the first time this year.”

The coach did cite some positives on the individual level, though, highlighting the performances of Dukes senior defensive end Markel Blakey and sophomore center Blake Barker.
