A welding incident is determined to be the cause of a fire that burned a piece of farming equipment Tuesday morning. The fire took place at 3286 Poorhouse Road in Rice. Rice Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Rick Bidwell said the department received the call at 10:24 a.m. Bidwell said a skid loader was being welded inside of an outdoor workshop. Bidwell said a possible spark may have caused a fire to the skid loader. The individual welding the equipment drove the vehicle outside of the building, Bidwell said. Bidwell said the department used a hose line to douse the fire to the skid loader, then checked the scene and vehicle for any residual hazards. Farmville Volunteer Fire Department and Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office also responded. Robert Jones, the owner of the farm, said in researching skid loaders, one used skid loader cost about $7,500. Bidwell said he did not know the estimated cost of damage. He said the outdoor workshop was not damaged in the fire.
