The Buckingham County Youth League (BCYL) Majors All-Star team is looking raise funds for its World Series trip to Oxford, Alabama after going undefeated in the recent State Dixie Youth Baseball Major League All-Star Tournament in Victoria.
“The boys didn’t give up,” BCYL Majors Manager Ben Gormus said, noting his team often played from behind.
An exception to that was the state championship game against the Dinwiddie Nationals All-Stars in which Buckingham jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jake Carter drove in both runs.
The highly-acclaimed Dinwiddie squad showed some of its offensive force in the second inning with a home run, but that was the only run it would get.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth inning when the BCYL Majors rattled off five unanswered runs, scored by Holden Tyson, Dillon Kimberlin, Harrison Mitchell, Braedyn Schaeffer and Eli Bryant.
Justin Gunter turned in an outstanding performance on the mound for Buckingham, helping hold Dinwiddie to four hits for the game.
The BCYL Majors finished the game with 10 hits.
In its penultimate game of the tournament, Buckingham fell behind 4-0 early to the Lunenburg All-Stars, but rebounded to win 11-6.
Lunenburg managed only three hits in the contest, while Buckingham piled up 13.
Though Gormus has significant coaching experience, this marks the first time he will be going to a Dixie Youth Baseball World Series tournament, and he said it is the first time a Buckingham Majors team has ever qualified.
Representing Virginia, his squad is set to take on Arkansas at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5 in Oxford, Alabama.
To raise funds for the trip, the BCYL Majors will be holding a fundraiser Thursday at 6 p.m. at the McDonald’s in Dillwyn on Route 15.
Players will be there in uniform, serving tables, cleaning and greeting the public.
