The Student Artist Mural Project’s second painting — designed by Kailynn Hamilton, a rising seventh grader at Prince Edward County Middle School (PECMS) — is in the final stages of production on the exterior wall of Christopher’s Fine Arts & Framing on East 2nd Street.
“I started with the same girl looking at a famous painting, and then we ended up deciding since it was going to be on a frame shop, we should show that she’s looking at a mirror of herself,” Hamilton said, noting that the mirror image repeats itself continuously.
She said she’s been working with art since she was 3 years old and that she hopes to go to college to work with art.
“We’re actually going to take a frame from (Christopher’s Fine Arts & Framing) and put it as the biggest frame there, and then we’re going to paint in the the rest of the frames,” Hamilton said.
The project started out as PECMS art teacher Carley Fetty’s idea for the Supporting Outstanding Urban Projects (SOUP) event, where it received a first place $2,000 grant. The SOUP event took place April 7 at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts in downtown Farmville.
The project is working to have five murals throughout Farmville that will be repainted on a rolling basis.
“We are definitely doing one (at) The Outer You… that was designed by two rising seventh graders,” Fetty said, referring to Julianna Swanson and Carrington Detrick.
In a previous interview, Fetty said as soon as the project won at the SOUP event, she put the word out that it was taking submissions.
“What we’re going to do with the entries is it’s going to be rolling entries,” Fetty said. “You can submit your artwork all year.”
