No tax increases in budget

No tax increases and a soon-to-be determined projects allocation are among the highlights of the proposed $126,750 2017-18 fiscal year budget for the Dillwyn Town Council.
A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for July 11 at 7:15 p.m.
The real estate tax rate will remain at .0465 cents per $100 of assessed value, as will the public service corporation tax rate, which will also stay at .0465 cents.
The tax rate for personal property/machinery and tools will remain at .28 cents.
The new fiscal year will begin Sept. 1.
While the tax rates are no different from the existing fiscal year budget, the total budget estimated for this year differs from the $1.91 million total budget amount in the existing fiscal year.
In the upcoming fiscal year, total expenses and total revenue both expect to reach $126,750 — the total advertised budget.
No money has been allocated for town projects in the proposed budget, Town Clerk Loretta Reams confirmed, adding that the allocations would be dependent on funds provided by the state.
Reams said she has not received an approximate figure regarding funds that may be allocated to an ongoing transportation and town improvement project, which will soon be in its fourth and fifth phases.
The ongoing project, which began in 2012, includes improvements to the town’s buildings and streets, Reams said.
“It’s town improvement, street improvement, facade improvement, various things,” Reams said.
She said when the total budget has been finalized, a second public hearing is expected to take place before the budget takes effect in September.
Expenses from the town include town council expenses, estimated at $38,600 for the upcoming fiscal year.
Other expenses from the treasurer’s office and general maintenance are estimated at $31,500 and $49,100, respectively.
