A portion of River Road (Route 600) in Southern Cumberland will be closed for construction beginning March 6.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the portion of River Road that crosses Green Creek will be closed through June 9 so the bridge structure can be replaced, according to VDOT spokeswoman Paula Jones.
The closed portion of the road will be between Routes 653 and 657.
Jones said the detour will be using Routes 653, 638, 45 and 657 back to 600. The detour route is approximately 9.8 miles and is not expected to cause traffic issues along the respective roads, she said.
“When we set these up, we look at the roads to make sure they are able to handle the volume and the vehicle count, so it’s certainly not an expectation that it will create issues,” Jones said.
Jones said the project is projected to cost roughly $500,000.
This is a corrected story, updated from its original. VDOT stated the road was Plank, however, the road is River.
