The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Volunteer & Community Engagement Fair 5:30-8 p.m. Jan. 5 at the Firemen’s Sports Arena, 1328 Zion Hill Road in Farmville.
Registration for organizations is $20 and includes a 6-foot table and two chairs. Tables are limited. Food trucks will also be on site.
Civic clubs, non-profit organizations and small businesses are invited to recruit members and volunteers. People who want to volunteer or join various groups are then invited to attend the fair.
Ellen Masters, chair of the chamber’s Leadership Farmville Committee, said the idea for the fair goes back a number of years to when she worked at Longwood University.
“I had been in Farmville for a while and saw a huge need for organizations to have volunteers,” Masters said. “I was also hearing young people say there was nothing to do, and I always felt there is stuff to do.”
While at Longwood, she created engagement fairs linking students with organizations.
Now working at Hampden-Sydney College and being a part of the chamber, Masters said there are 27 Leadership Farmville students, but she wants to convince the wider community to get involved, too.
