Happy to keep Reid

It may not have been his initial plan, but we are glad to see George Reid remain on the Cumberland County School Board.
Though the longtime board member has not actively pursued the District 4 seat during recent elections, his constituents continue to write in his name. This is the third time Reid has attempted to retire from the board. Most recently, Reid retired for a mere six months, but stepped in “temporarily” with the resignation of his replacement.
The board benefitted from his sacrifice then, as it will now.
During Monday’s meeting, Reid’s announcement that he has decided to stay didn’t come as a surprise to those in attendance. Despite his eagerness to retire, Reid can’t hide his dedication to the board and the school system.
He has seen the board through ups and downs and has had a hand in many improvements to the division during his 23 years on the board.
Reid has served as chairman as well as a general member since he first began in June 1993.
In his time, he has seen the way board members are chosen change from Board of Supervisor appointment to election by the people.
He has been in support of several major projects such as building new schools in the county, a new laptop initiative and other school improvements.
As many supervisors and board members have come and gone, Reid’s voice has been a constant.
We are grateful for Reid’s service and look forward to another four years.
