Christmas Mother a big success

There’s no doubt about it: The first Heart of Virginia Christmas Mother campaign was a big success.
So many people gave so much that the organization was able to help more than its original goal of 200 children — many of whom would barely have a Christmas this year if not for this worthy effort.
The scene, described and photographed by staff writer Carson Reeher, was a joyous one, with the Firemen’s Sports Arena transformed into a “store” of sorts. Parents had their pick of one item each off various tables — batteries, books, games, etc.
The smiles said it all.
There is no doubt in our minds there is one person who made this first-time effort such a wonderful success: Nancy Haga, the 2016 Heart of Virginia Christmas Mother. This tireless, timeless champion of children has an amazing gift to draw people to her cause. Those who know her know how much she loves helping others and so acting as this year’s Christmas Mother was, simply, a natural choice. She was the perfect choice for the first year and whoever comes after has the proverbial big shoes to fill.
The good news about this campaign is that it’s not over. More events are planned in an effort to get a head start on 2017.
To those who gave money, gifts and, especially, their time, we express our thanks along with that of the entire community. Your efforts have made what is considered one of the brightest times of year just that much brighter.
