Board to discuss coalition

The Cumberland County School Board may solidify its involvement with the Coalfield Coalition during its December meeting.
After discussing at its previous meeting, the board will vote Monday on whether to adopt the resolution for Cumberland County Public Schools to support the recommendations introduced at the Coalfields Equity Summit.
The resolution asks the General Assembly to provide a Cost of Competing Adjustment (CoCA) for salaries and cost of operations for Coalfields school districts. This would be similar to a CoCA legislators approved for 18 divisions in Northern Virginia.
The coalition is also asking the General Assembly to reissue the Enrollment Loss Budget Line for Virginia Schools, approve a 2 percent compensation supplement — which was recently removed from the state budget — and consider other long-term solutions that could provide equitable funding to school divisions across Virginia. These solutions were originally presented at the equity summit, which took place Oct. 13.
Among action items for Monday’s meeting are requests for the board’s approval of personnel reports and supplemental appropriations. The appropriations — $25,000 from Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports — are pending approval from the school board to petition the Cumberland Board of Supervisors for approval.
Also listed under action items is approval of a strategic plan. The board’s Strategic Plan Committee met Oct. 12 to review the goals and provide input on strategies.
The board took up the plan for first reading during its Nov. 14 meeting. Now, the committee and Superintendent Dr. Amy Griffin are requesting the board’s approval of the plan.
In addition, the board will consider approving three goals. The board wants to improve visibility at school and community events and continue to advocate for the school system; work collectively as a board by following the roles and responsibilities of being a board member; and to seek input from all stakeholders.
In other business, Griffin will read through Cumberland County Public School Board’s legislative positions on things such as the Virginia Retirement System, funding and assessments.
The board’s closed session will include discussion of Griffin’s midyear evaluation as well as discussion of student variances.
Also during the meeting, students of the month will be recognized as well as staff members and the community member of the month. The board plans to honor students Channing Bailey, Devondre Holman and Sam Abbasi and faculty members Rebecca Schwerdtfeger, Victoria Kinney and Melanie Greene.
Karie McCoy will be recognized for her achievement in the community with her business, Karie’s Baked Goods.
There will also be a performance by students in the Cumberland High and Middle school bands
The bands will be recognized for their participation in numerous holiday events throughout the community, including Christmas parades, Breakfast with Santa and a celebration of learning night.
Monday’s meeting will take place in the High/Middle School Cafetorium. It will begin at 6 p.m. with a closed session and opens for the public at 7 p.m.
