Appomattox NHP to hold open house

The staff and volunteers of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and its friends group, the Appomattox 1865 Foundation, invite everyone to the park’s 2016 holiday open house on Sunday, Dec. 11, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The village will be decorated with freshly made hand crafted wreaths made from local greenery and will offer a glimpse of 1860s Virginia when families celebrated a more simply decorated, Civil War-era Christmas. As in many years past, the Appomattox Garden Club is providing period-style decorations. There will also be a children’s craft station, where old-fashioned Christmas ornaments can be made as keepsakes. The Visitor Center will be the stop for hot coffee and refreshments.
The open house is meant to be a neighborly gesture for the community and a perfect chance to come by and see the latest projects and hear about changes that have occurred during the last year and plans for 2017. For example, this year the park has become an admission-free park and has made some improvements to its History Trail. There are more plans to share concerning the Appomattox 1865 Foundation, trails, accessibility, and the 152nd anniversary for 2017, just to name a few.
For questions concerning the event, call the park’s Visitor Center at (434) 352-8787, ext. 226 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
