The St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Buckingham has been well covered by The Herald and, I am sure, will prove a welcome addition to the county.
However, this seminary is not for the formation of Roman Catholic priests, but for priests who will be members of the Society of St. Pius X and, so, will not serve the parishes of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, such as St. Theresa in Farmville.
The relationship of the Society of St. Pius X with the worldwide Catholic Church is interesting, but complicated, as the society is not in full communion with the Church.
There was an excellent three-part article in the Catholic Virginian, the Richmond Diocese newspaper, that explains the situation very well.
The article can be read at www.catholicvirginian.org. The article is prominent, but if a search is needed, the term “sspx” will find the article.
