Cumberland County School Board recognized several students, faculty and staff members during its November meeting.
Three students of the month were chosen, one from each school.
Kamira Holman, Angel Daniel Henriquez and Veronica Nelson were chosen from the elementary, middle and high schools, respectively.
The board recognized Kamira, a second-grader, for her success in math class. Kamira said she thinks she does well in school because she practices multiplication and division on the bus with the older students. Her teachers say she is always a responsible, kind, young lady who they can always count on to do the right thing, according to Superintendent Dr. Amy Griffin.
Outside of school, she enjoys playing soccer and basketball with her younger brother, Keith.
Sixth-grader Angel is new to Cumberland County but has already found his place in the middle school and is enjoying his classes.
Angel loves to read and Harry Potter is his favorite series. This is Angel’s first time being award the “Student of the month” recognition, though he has made the Honor Roll and Principal’s Honor Roll at past schools. “His goal in life is to become an architect, and be the first member in his family to attend college,” Griffin read.
His teachers say, “He takes pride in his work and does his best to ensure that those around him are successful as well.”
Veronica, a 10th-grader, loves to draw, write, learn about the human brain, read, and watch TV, Griffin read to the board.
Veronica is not only an honor roll student, but also enrolled in the dual enrollment program and boasts a 4.2 GPA. She participates with the soccer team and on the Scholastic Bowl Team.
The board also recognized Senior Chase Grubbs for his participation with the Cumberland High School (CHS) Golf Team.
Chase broke CHS’ 18-hole record by playing a round of 76. He is the 2015 and 2016 Conference 42 Champion, as well as the 2016 1A East Region Champion and the 2016 1A East Region Golfer of the Year.
He qualified for the Virginia High School League State Golf Tournament during his ninth, 11th and 12th grade years and, in October, finished third in the state for the A1 competition, setting a new CHS record.
The board recognized Soren Johnson as the winner of the 2016 Impact Award by the National Hemophilia Foundation in Florida. This award goes to “young people with bleeding conditions who are creating a positive impact on the world around them by engaging in service in their community, school, or home; demonstrating a commitment to health and wellness behaviors; or by role modeling exceptional achievement in service and volunteerism, health and wellness, academics, athletics, or the arts.”
Jacob Tatum, a volunteer with the Cumberland County Public Schools’ IT department, received the Helping Hand recognition. Three teachers, Savannah Thomas, Miranda Gresham and Rachel Taylor, each received a “Meet the Staff” recognition.
