Luminary at Sailor’s Creek
Published 1:20 pm Tuesday, November 8, 2016
With help from period-dressed living historians, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park will host its annual Veterans Day Luminary commemorative event on Saturday from 6-8:30 p.m.
Visitors will experience a ranger-led, guided hike along the Kershaw Trail at the Confederate Overlook portion of the Battlefield. Aglow with more than 500 luminaries, each one representing the life of a Northern or Southern soldier who gave their last full measure during the Battles of Sailor’s Creek, travelers will visit 10 different stations along the journey. At each station, a living historian will emerge from the shadows to share a first-person account of the battles. As with any luminary-based tribute, the surreal, peaceful atmosphere will leave visitors with a sobering, heartfelt memory that will last a lifetime.
Each luminary hike lasts approximately 45 minutes. For more information, contact the park’s visitor center at (804) 561-7510, or email sailorscreek@dcr.virginia.gov.
