The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia sentenced the stepfather of a Longwood University student found dead in Southampton County in April to 240 months in prison, or 20 years, for being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Wesley Paul Hadsell pleaded guilty to the charge as part of a plea agreement more than year ago on Nov. 6, 2015.
“Hadsell admitted that on Dec. 23, 2013, he purchased ammunition at Bob’s Gun Shop in Norfolk and that on Dec. 31, 2013, he took that ammunition to a gun range in Chesapeake, where he and other individuals used some of the ammunition,” officials said in a press release. “Hadsell retained possession of approximately 80 rounds of ammunition after the trip to the range.”
Officials say Hadsell had at least 10 prior convictions for crimes ranging from burglary and bank robbery to felonious restraint. Hadsell’s prior convictions qualified him as an “Armed Career Criminal,” which subjected him to a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence.
On Oct. 7, 2015, officers found Hadsell in possession of heroin, according to the Norfolk Police Department.
According to Norfolk police, Hadsell’s daughter, Angelica, a former Longwood student, died from acute heroin poisoning.
