Two Cumberland High School (CHS) Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets attended a leadership and ethics conference Oct. 27 in Mechanicsville.
Cadets Caylor Scales and Alyssa Yonce joined other high school juniors where they met with a number of guest speakers from West Point, Virginia Military Institute and other university representatives. They got to hear Diana Holt, a lawyer who has dedicated her life to defending wrongly accused death row inmates, and Jack Saville, a former West Point graduate. Students also had the opportunity attend breakout sessions to discuss issues in leadership, ethics, and morality. CSM (R) Dwayne A. Tigs, JROTC Army instructor, accompanied cadets on the trip.
Earlier in the year, cadets also had an opportunity to attend the Tank Farm in Nokesville. The “Farm” is a collection of military vehicles ranging from World War I through the Global War on Terrorism. Students interacted with living history re-enactors and watched as the vehicles maneuvered on the field. Cadets also had an opportunity to talk with veterans from World War II to the present.
According to Lt. Cmdr. William Carter, senior JROTC instructor, all the cadets who participated had a great time.
