Authorities have determined that a 65-year-old male inmate died of “natural causes” while being held at the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville.

According to Arkuie Williams, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner State administrator, Kenneth White, who was placed under medical observation after arriving at the jail July 5, died of “hypertensive cardiovascular disease.”

“While being monitored by camera and on a 15-minute watch (on July 7), he was observed kneeling by his bed on the floor,” jail officials said in an earlier release.

After being checked by medical staff, he was found to be unresponsive, jail officials said.

“At that time, CPR was administered until the Prince Edward Rescue (Squad) arrived and began emergency medical procedures. After contact with Centra Southside (Community) Hospital, he was pronounced deceased by the hospital,” officials said in the release.

Jail officials said White, who died July 7, was being held on charges of assault and battery from Nottoway General District Court.

“He came from … Piedmont Geriatric … He had charges in Nottoway County,” said Jail Superintendent Donald Hunter.

According to the Virginia General District Court Online Case Information System, White was arrested July 5 for an alleged offense on June 26. The jail said he was being held without bail.

According to the release, the jail immediately contacted Virginia State Police. Upon their arrival, jail officials said, state police investigated the details surrounding the inmate’s death.

“Upon completion of their investigation, he was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond,” the release stated.
