Ty Carter, also known as Ahmed Abdul Rahman, drove by Farmville Area Community Emergency Services (FACES) one cold morning in February. He saw a quiet line of people shivering in the cold waiting for the food distribution center to open. He discussed his observation with his wife, Kalimah Carter, and they launched a free coffee and donut program for their neighbors. As their persistence continued, other members of the Islamic Center of Prince Edward County joined them. Since then, the project has grown to where, in addition to a donut and a warm drink, the center gives away fresh fruit and slightly used clothing. On Oct. 1, this helping neighbors enterprise rose to a new high to include a voter registration station staffed by a member of the NAACP of Prince Edward County. Voter Registrar Beverly Abdus-Sabur answered questions and invited those who had not registered the opportunity to do so. “Neighbors working together will make Prince Edward County a wonderful community in which to live,” Abdus-Sabar said.
