Fuqua falls to Seahawks in gridiron shootout

The Fuqua School varsity football team, which started its season 4-0, went 0-2 last week, but unlike its 54-11 blowout loss to Roanoke Catholic School on Oct. 10, it was in a back-and-forth slugfest against Atlantic Shores Christian School at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on Friday. The Seahawks prevailed in the end, 49-46.
“It was a good game all the way around,” Falcons Head Coach Ben Manis said. “Our boys played hard. After losing the way we did on Monday, a lot of young men would just have folded up and quit, and our guys just refused to do that. We knew that if we came out and we played our game that we could contend with them. And they’re a very good team.”
Both teams went up by multiple scores at different points in the game, but the Seahawks were able to take a significant lead late.
“Our final score came off of a pass from Devin Allen to Tyler Thomas to get us within three, and we tried an onside kick, and we just didn’t get it,” Manis said.
Allen, a senior, finished 16-for-26 passing for 147 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also carried the ball 22 times for 105 yards and three scores.
Senior Ed Newman had nine carries for 85 yards and a touchdown, five catches for 52 yards and one throw for an 11-yard touchdown to senior Michael Thornton.
Thomas, a junior, had three catches for 63 yards and a score, and junior Nick Fariss hit a 26-yard field goal along with five extra points.
Fuqua (4-2) hosts North Cross School for homecoming Friday at 7 p.m.
