Cumberland County Public Schools was one of several school divisions across the state to be awarded a 2016 Cyber Security grant. Students who attended the 2016 CyberCamp, June 6-28, were recognized at the September 2016 school board meeting. The Virginia CyberCamp 2016 Program had very specific goals, which included increasing awareness of careers in cybersecurity among teachers and students; engaging students in project-driven learning; and introducing students and teachers to cybersecurity-related industry credentials and providing students a foundation in which they can pursue a cybersecurity related course of study and certification during the 2016-2017 school year. The program was open to rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students.

More than 700 students statewide participated in the program and more than 265 educators received professional development and training from the Cyber Innovation Center, a division of the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center. Their experiences and activities are projected to have a significant impact on building the pipeline for K-12 education to meet Virginia’s cybersecurity work force demands.

The following Cumberland High School students participated in the Virginia CyberCamp 2016 statewide pilot: Jair Battle, D’Anthony Brooks, Davidrick Brooks, Trevon Butler, Brandon Caban, Kajaun Copeland, Nadia Elasha, Kavon Foster, Juwuan Gray, Sade’ Gregory, Matthew Hazlegrove, Soren Johnson, Jason Long, Justin Long, Wyatt Long, Amir McClinton, Caylor Scales, Hannah Swain, Kaijhaun Trent, Trevis Trent, Hayes Turner, Michaela Woodson, Tyauna Woodson.
