As chair of Longwood Center for the Visual Arts’ (LCVA) board, I am proud of the Friday night Wine and Brews and am excited to look ahead to their possible continuation in some form. LCVA Director Rachel Ivers initiated the events in response to the closing of The Bakery, where a small group had gathered on Friday evenings. They immediately grew to about 130 people enjoying a few hours of social time together after the close of the workweek.

The gatherings serve several purposes other than as obvious entertainment. They bring together people of many different interests who would not normally spend leisure time together, providing a link between town and gown. A museum is devoted to outreach, and Wine and Brew brings people into our galleries to appreciate the ever-changing exhibits.

Classes have begun — fall is fast upon us. The weekly gatherings will become less frequent after September, but the LCVA board is working to address the event’s values in a form less demanding for the busy staff and participating public. Please check your schedules and come on down to these final Friday nights and afterward as they are posted.

My last word is to thank Ms. Ivers and her diligent staff who have made Wine and Brew available. It is also to extend appreciation to all who have participated. Farmville is indeed a different and better place these days, and events such as this that bring the community together are no small contributor.
