CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors recently endorsed two legislative initiatives requiring action by the Virginia General Assembly. Supervisors unanimously endorsed Lottery for Localities, an initiative spearheaded by elected officials in Nottoway County. If adopted, it would provide all cities, towns and counties a 5-percent return on lottery sales in their localities. On a 4-1 vote, Cumberland supervisors also endorsed an initiative from York County that would equalize the taxing ability of cities, counties and towns on meals. According to board documents, the meals tax rate for counties is capped at 4 percent and may only be instituted through voter referendum. The initiatives’ successes require General Assembly approval.
