H-SC falls in opener

The Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) football team fell 38-28 to Averett University in the Tigers’ 2016 season opener.
The Tigers put up 329 yards of offense, 236 through the air and 93 on the ground. Averett had a strong night offensively with 520 total yards — 262 passing and 258 rushing.
Tigers freshman Matt DeMasi (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a score, tying the program record for longest kickoff return.
On the night, H-SC’s Edgar Moore (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) went 12-of-28 for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Alec Cobb (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) went 5-of-11 for 87 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Owen Costello (South Riding/Paul VI) led with five catches for 102 yards and a score. Cam Johnson (Dillwyn/Buckingham) added 60 yards and a score on four catches.
The Tigers (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) host Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
