So, an introduction in 300 words.
Full name: Martin Lawrence Cahn.
Born in 1965 on New York’s Long Island. Lived in Kabul, Afghanistan; Guadalajara, Mexico; and Saipan in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as a child and teenager.
Traveled around the world while on Saipan, visiting London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Cairo, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Manila. Also visited Tokyo, Japan; and Anchorage, Alaska. Also traveled around the U.S. and lower Canada as a 5-year-old.
Began a 14-year career as a radio announcer while attending high school on Saipan.
Attended Syracuse University for a year and a half before transferring to Memphis State University; earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in communications. Worked at a radio station in Dahlonega, Ga., between degree programs.
Moved to the Columbia, S.C., area in 1990. Finished working in radio in 1995, and then worked as an administrative assistant to a major bank and major insurance company. Married in 1997 to a woman also from New York. In 2000, learned of an opening at the Camden, S.C. Chronicle-Independent (C-I), and joined the staff of as a reporter. This fulfilled a legacy, as the grandson of long-time owner of The Massapequa Post, Ira L. Cahn, whose wife, Barbara, was editor for the first 30 of the 40 years they owned the paper.
Three months after being hired by the C-I, adopted older son, Joshua; 10-1/2 months later, adopted younger son, Caleb.
Became assistant editor in 2004; promoted to editor in 2012.
Divorced in 2015; boys are with their mother. Am still in the process of moving to Farmville. Chose to join The Farmville Herald as both a challenge and a change, with family in suburban Washington, D.C.; Winchester; and Delaware.
Oh, and really loves jazz and all forms of sci-fi fantasy.
