A special election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 8 to decide who will represent District Four on the Buckingham County School Board.
The two candidates who will appear on the ballot are Frank M. Knott Jr. and Joii W. Goodman. Both candidates are running as independents, according to Voter Registrar Margaret W. Thomas.
Goodman ran against the late Russell P. “Pete” Gowin in November, losing by only 41 votes. Weeks later, Gowin died, leaving the seat vacant. In December, Knott was appointed by the school board to serve on an interim basis until a special election could be held.
Knott previously served a partial term after Gowin resigned in May 2013. Gowin went on to win another election that November.
“He is considered the incumbent because he is filling in as an appointed position for the school board,” Thomas said of Knott.
The deadline to file to run for the seat has passed, she said.
The term of office will expire in Dec. 2019. The November before, a general election will be held to elect members of the board of supervisors, constitutional officers, school board members and other local officials.
