James Douglas Cosby

James Douglas Cosby, 67, of Winchester, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Born May 15, 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of James Grant Cosby and Ruby Smith Cosby.  He grew up in Farmville and Plainfield, NJ.

James is survived by his partner, Martha Hanley of Gerrardstown, WV; his mother, Ruby Smith of Plainfield, NJ; aunts, uncles, and many cousins as well as his many friends of Winchester.

He received a degree in Art (illustration) from Pratt Art Institute, New York City while working at Random House.  He left the art profession to do work in tree service and construction always showing his conscientious work ethic, attention to detail, many hands on skills and great sense of humor.

James was recognized for his 30 years of community service in Winchester with the Coalition for Racial Unity, Shenandoah Arts Council, John Farrar Elks Lodge, and Hopewell Centre Friends Meeting.

A memorial service and tree planting will be held at Hopewell Centre Friends’ Meeting, Clearbrook, on August 13, 2016.
