What’s going on with all the fencing at Walmart on Peery Drive?

Construction fencing that has appeared on Peery Drive between Walmart and Ruby Tuesday in Farmville is in preparation for the new Murphy USA gas station and store.

On May 31, a groundbreaking ceremony for the store took place with company representatives, chamber representatives and members of the Farmville Town Council.

According to Joy Stump, the chamber’s executive director, the store could be completed in about 12 weeks.

According to John Addis, a district manager for the firm, the new store will be 208 square feet and will offer traditional snacks, beverages, tobacco, lottery tickets and general merchandise, in addition to fuel.

The store will be open every day from 6 a.m.-midnight.

Those who use Walmart credit cards or gift cards will see rebates when they pay using the cards, Addis said.

“As with all Murphy USA locations, we offer a (three-cent-per-gallon) price rollback at the pumps when using a Walmart Gift Card — with a 2 percent statement rebate for Walmart Credit Card users,” he said.

The business will have five to seven people, including assistant and store managers, said Addis. There is currently a store manager position listed on the Murphy USA website.

According to Town Manager Gerald Spates, Murphy USA stores are often found near Walmarts. “They are not owned by Walmart, but they are connected. You see many Murphy USA stations in front of Walmarts all over,” Stump said.

Murphy USA is represented in 24 states and has more than 1,000 stores, according to the the firm’s website.

There are 14 other Murphy USA stores in Virginia, with three under construction and seven more to begin construction this year, said Addis.

Some locations where Murphy USA will open in Virginia include, Roanoke, Culpeper, Suffolk, Rocky Mount, Winchester, Gloucester, Chester and King George.

Farmville’s store will be a 16-pump facility that provides four grades of gas, plus diesel. “The four fuel dispensers will provide customers with Ethanol-Free Regular Unleaded and diesel at every dispenser,” Addis said.

According to Addis, “Murphy USA’s vision is to deliver the quickest and friendliest service every day as well as low prices and high value to our customers — and we’re thrilled to be able to deliver on that promise to the community of Farmville. …”

“Any new business is always good. It brings employment opportunities and adds to our tax base,” said Stump.

Addis added that having more gas stations in town will help to create more competition and, hopefully, lower gas prices.
