Mailbox bashers sentenced

Three people who police say destroyed a dozen mailboxes, damaged a gravemarker and stole church property have been sentenced with suspended jail time, community service and restitution.
Morgan Elaine Rush, 22, of Dillwyn, James Lee Absher Jr., 24, of Wingina, and Jamie Leigh Baird Olzer, 20, of Dillwyn, pleaded guilty to numerous destruction of property charges in Buckingham General District Court recently, receiving 12 months in jail suspended for each of the charges. The three were not prosecuted on several of the remaining charges, which included entering property to damage, trespassing, damaging church property and petit larceny.
The charges stemmed from incidents on Aug. 15, which took place in the early morning hours on Back Mountain and Ca Ira roads southeast of Sprouse’s Corner.
According to the court clerk’s office, the three were sentenced with restitution to each victim in connection with damaging the mailboxes.
Rush originally faced 30 charges, Absher faced 30 charges and Olzer is faced 33 charges.
All three suspects were allegedly involved in stealing sign letters from Salem United Methodist Church on Ca Ira Road, while Olzer was also charged with removing sign letters from Enon Baptist Church.
In addition to destroying and damaging of several mailboxes, the three also faced charges in connection with damaging a field, damaging tombstones and trespassing.
