Dukes qualify for VHSL 1A state competition

Ten Cumberland High School track athletes qualified for the Virginia High School League (VHSL) 1A State Track and Field Championships on Saturday after performing at a meet hosted by Woodberry Forest School.
Ebony Jones was the top finisher for Cumberland, as she placed third in the 400-meter run and third in the triple jump.
Tonishea Ford came in third in the discus event.
The CHS boys 4X800 relay team, composed of Chase Grubbs, Matthew Bapties, Hunter Cochran and Jared Halvorsen, qualified for the state meet. The girls 4X800 relay team, composed of Marya Elasha, Tayanna Bradley, Munirah Fulani and Nadia Elasha, also qualified for the state meet as a team.
Jones qualified for the state meet in the 400-meter event.
Cumberland also had track members to qualify for the VHSL 1A East Regional meet.
The girls 4X400 relay team, composed of Jones, Ayana Speas, Marya Elasha and Bradley, qualified for regionals.
Jones made the cut in triple jump, long jump and the 200-meter event.
Bapties qualified in the 1,600-meter event and Speas qualified in the 300-meter hurdles event.
The CHS teams will return to action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. when they travel to Prince Edward for a meet.
