Schewels Furniture Company, located at 1507 S. Main St. in Farmville, will soon move to a new location that firm is set to construct by fall.
Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates said the new Schewels building will be located at the corner of Peery Drive and Meriwood Farm Road west of South Main Street.
“The Farmville community has been a great market for Schewels,” said Marc Schewel, a co-owner of the firm.
He said the company purchased new property, which will accommodate the standard size for a typical Schewels retail location, including a 22,000-square-foot showroom and 8,000 feet of storage space.
“We just felt like this was a good time to relocate,” said Schewel. He said the shopping center where Schewels is currently located was recently sold. The store has been located on South Main Street for the last 7-8 years, according to Schewel.
Schewels Furniture specializes in furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics and lawn and garden equipment. Schewels began business in 1897, though Schewels in Farmville was established in 1979 at a downtown location on Main Street.
Schewel said he appreciated the support in Farmville of the company over the years.
According to its website, “Schewels was incorporated in 1917. Schewels operated out of a single location for over 30 years, opening its second store in 1930 in Harrisonburg … Growth was conservative for the next 75 years, with 12 stores comprising the chain in 1972. Beginning about that time and continuing into the present, growth became more aggressive, with almost three dozen new locations opening from 1990 until 2001.”
Schewel said construction on the new location is slated to begin in the next month, with a projected completion in the fall.
Currently, Schewels has 52 stores throughout Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Locations include Blackstone, Lynchburg and Appomattox.
“Schewels is one of only four furniture retailers in the United States with 100 years of continuous operation under the same name and family management,” the firm’s website stated.
