A crash involving a deer in Buckingham killed a 56-year-old Appomattox County man on Thursday.
According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, James G. Pugh, 54, died at the scene.
The crash occurred on Route 24, about one mile east of Route 636, she said.
“A vehicle was traveling west on Route 24 when a deer ran out in front of it. The vehicle struck the deer forcing the deer into the eastbound travel lane,” she said.
“A 1993 Toyota pickup truck was in the eastbound travel lane and struck the deer. The pickup truck then ran off the road and struck a tree.”
Pugh, the driver of the truck, was not wearing a seatbelt, she said.
The driver of the first vehicle was not injured, according to Geller.
