A 26-year-old Cumberland County man faces a felony sexual assault charge stemming from an incident with an 8-year-old girl.

According to Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Dennis Ownby, police received a report about the alleged sexual assault on March 15.

“We received a complaint from a parent in another county charging Kelly Bass, of Cumberland with fondling her 8-year-old daughter while she was here in Cumberland,” Ownby said. “She was here visiting relatives. The suspect and the victim are related.”

Ownby said after interviews with the child and Bass, a search warrant was executed at his home on Horsepen Road.

“Shortly after the search warrant was executed, we filed charges on Bass. Right now, he’s being held at Piedmont Regional Jail without bail,” Ownby said.

Bass was charged with object sexual penetration of a child. More charges are likely to be filed, according to Ownby.

Ownby said the alleged victim does not reside in Cumberland County.
