Storm causes injuries, damages homes

A quick-moving storm knocked out power to thousands of people across Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward counties on Wednesday afternoon, toppling trees and damaging homes.

Centra Southside Community Hospital received five patients from the storm, according to Centra spokeswoman Diane Ludwig. Three were in critical condition and two were reported to have minor injuries, she said.

According to Central Virginia Electric Cooperative spokesman Greg Kelly, substations in Pamplin and Curdsville were taken off line because of the storm.

At 196 Fanny White Road in Buckingham, a tree was blown onto the roof of a home, creating a hole in the living space, according to county emergency management coordinator Kevin Flippen. No injuries were reported.

No substantial storm damage was reported in Cumberland or Prince Edward, according to officials.

At press time, power outages were reported by Dominion in Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward; by Central Virginia Electric Cooperative in western Buckingham and northern Cumberland; and by Southside Electric Cooperative in western Buckingham and Prince Edward.

The storm tore a roof off a home on Webbs Mill Road in eastern Appomattox, according to Toga Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Brian Bates. One person sustained minor injuries, he said.

Several homes were destroyed along U.S. Route 460 in Evergreen in Appomattox County.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency following the event.
