After being named the Quad River’s Conference 34 runner-up on Feb. 15, the Prince Edward County High School varsity boys basketball team hosted Nandua on Friday in the first round of the 2A East Region tournament — defeating the visitors 68-49.
The Eagles only saw a tie in their competition against Nandua in the final quarter of the game when both teams scored 14 points.
However, since Prince Edward had outscored Nandua in every other quarter, it had extra points that aided the team in the final minutes of the game.
Zarius Jones led the Eagles with 18 points. Kevon Braxton added 15 points, while Marty Blount and Quantavis Nash notched 11 apiece.
“We are playing much better. We are playing as a team and we are playing more together,” said PECHS coach James Scott.
“We are taking it one game at a time.”
With the win the Eagles improved to 15-11 and advanced to the 2A East Region quarterfinals, where they traveled to George Mason on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
If the Eagles won their quarterfinal game, they would advance to the semifinals and play the winner of the Bruton/Robert E. Lee game. The game will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The winner of that game will advance to the final game of the regional tournament, which will be played at Orange County High School on Saturday at 8 p.m.
