The Fuqua School spelling bee was held recently with classroom winners from grades five through eight participating. After many rounds of challenging words, including the rarely-used “hoity-toity,” seventh-grade student Marya Dunning won the bee with “smidge.” Runner up was eighth grader Kaley Sublett.
Holt Mason, Grayson Newcomb, Evan Nichols and Jacob Strickler, with alternates Cole Atkins and Chandler Wright, represented the fifth grade; sixth-grade participants included Hannah Myers and Hadley Puckett and alternate George Magnotti. In addition to Dunning, Ryan McKay and alternates Jackson Allen and Sophie Watson represented the seventh grade. Roman Davis and alternates Peyton Newcomb and Kaitlyn Morgan competed for the eighth grade alongside Kaley.
