As the New Year begins, it is time for school administrators, counselors and activities directors to consider outstanding young people to be recognized as the best the school has to offer as candidates for Virginia High School League (VHSL) scholarships.
“VHSL and Allstate Insurance awards 19 VHSL/Allstate Foundation Achievement Award Scholarships to an outstanding male athlete, outstanding female athlete, outstanding academic activities participant in each enrollment group, plus a Courageous Achievement Award to a student who has overcome significant challenges or adversity and has become successful in student activities,” stated a statement released Wednesday from the VHSL.
“Each school is urged to nominate one student in each of the four categories, but it is important to remember that the awards are based on outstanding achievement in VHSL sports and activities, not primarily on performance in the classroom.”
March 15 is the deadline for applications.
Application forms are available at http://www.vhsl.org/about.scholarships, under resources.
A male and female will win the Vito Perriello Citizenship Scholarship fro $1,000 each. The scholarship is awarded to two students “wishing to further their education in medicine or an allied health field at an institution of higher learning, including universities, colleges and trade schools,” according to the release.
March 15 is also the deadline for the Perriello Citizenship Scholarship.
The last scholarship to be offered is the Charles Savedge Scholarship, which is presented to the league’s Student Journalist of the Year.
The scholarship is meant for students involved in school newspapers, yearbook or other community journalism.
The deadline for nomination forms for the Charles Savedge Scholarship is March 1.
