No one was injured when shots were allegedly fired from a vehicle reportedly chasing another from Buckingham into Cumberland on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident was reported at about 4:30 p.m., said Capt. Dennis Ownby of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officers were at Riverside Cafe, 522 N. Main St. in Farmville, on Wednesday evening examining the Ford F-250 four-door pickup, which was struck several times while two males were inside, before arriving in Farmville.
“It came in, these fellows were in Cumberland County on Plank Road and were being pretty much chased by another vehicle, is what they said, and were being shot at from the other vehicle,” Ownby said.
The incident was first reported on Buckingham’s Stage Coach Road, which turns into Raines Tavern Road in Cumberland, according to Ownby.
When both vehicles arrived at the North Main Street and Plank Road intersection, the other vehicle turned down Plank Road, he said.
Ownby said police checked the immediate area for the other vehicle but were unable to locate it.
“The call originally came to us. Once we determined it happened in Buckingham, we called them,” he said.
“We’ve got impacts all over the place and they go through [the vehicle]. There’s probably four or five just on the windshield,” Ownby said of the shots that struck the truck.
“We kind of think it started over a hunting violation,” he said.
“We’re working on that,” Ownby said when asked of a description of the vehicle. “[The sheriff’s] talking to some suspects.”
There’s no word on what type of gun was used.
Farmville Police along with officers with the state’s Department of Game and Inland Fisheries responded, he said.
