J. Floyd Wine

J. Floyd Wine, Pop, Daddy, Granddaddy, 98, passed from this earthly life to be with Jesus in His eternal Heavenly home on Sunday, December 13, 2015 in Winchester.

He was born at Forestville, in Shenandoah County, on February 24, 1917, the son of the late Jacob David Wine and Kitty Sipe Huffman Wine.   On June 18, 1943, he married Ruth Augusta Wolf in Washington, DC.  She went to glory on June 13, 2008.  Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Wine) and husband, Bil Golliday; a son, Dr. John R. Wine and wife, Barbara of Burkeville; a brother, Jesse C. Wine of Woodstock who celebrated his 100th birthday (DeBoer) in July; two granddaughters , Amy Elizabeth Golliday of Stephens City and Christina Wine King (and husband, Joshua) of Tallahassee, FL, and two grandsons, Robert James “Robbie” Wine of South Bend, IN and Joshua of Burkeville.  Three brothers, the Rev. Galen D. Wine, Isaac J. Wine, and Ira M. Wine, are deceased, as is one sister, Mary (Mrs. Raymond R.) Lanier.

A lover of the outdoors, he was a lifetime gardener and generously shared his abundant produce with friends and family.  One of the founding members of the Big Horn Hunt Club, he was a successful hunter for seven decades from his first buck pictured in the Winchester Star newspaper in 1941 until the last deer in his late 80’s.

Mr. Wine, an employee of the Winchester post office for more than 41 years, retired as Superintendent of Postal Operations in January 1979.  A member of the Calvary Church of the Brethren, he served as pastor of the church for 18 years, taught the Bible Class for decades, and for many years served as Moderator and Church Board Chairman.  He did pastoral work at the Salem, Meadow Mills, Front Royal, and Browntown Churches of the Brethren.   For 12 years he conducted the Helping Hand Mission in Indian Hollow on Sunday afternoons.  In 1983 he served as Moderator of the 16,000 member Shenandoah District Church of the Brethren.  He was an American Red Cross first aid instructor for more than 20 years.  Rev. Wine served as President of the Shawnee District Council of Churches, the Frederick County Council of Churches, and was the President and Director of the Weekday Religious Education (WRE) Association, Inc. in Frederick County, which he helped found.  He has volunteered with the WRE for 70 years.  The October 20, 2012, Walk for Christ was dedicated to him.  He was interested in genealogy and history and published five books.

He was a member and former Director of the Shenandoah Valley Folklife Society; is Director Emeritus and life member of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society.  He has served on its Publications Committee since 1984.  For more than 25 years he volunteered in the Handley Library Archives.

The family will receive friends at Calvary Church of the Brethren on Friday evening, December 18, from 6-8 pm.  Calvary Church of the Brethren is located at 578 Front Royal Pike, Winchester, VA 22602.

A funeral service will be held in the Calvary Church of the Brethren on Saturday, December 19, at noon, conducted by Pastor Clarence “Chuck” Davis and the Rev. Fred M. Bowman. A meal will follow the service in the fellowship hall.  The family will have a private burial in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
