Careful what you wish for

The temptation to switch to an elected school board in Prince Edward County is diminished by a saw but growing reality: There are some jobs that nobody seems to want.
Both Buckingham and Cumberland counties had school board seats that were decided by write-in votes in the recent election because no candidates qualified to be on the ballot. Cumberland also elected a county supervisor that way.
It should give pause to those who believe Prince Edward’s current system of appointing school board members should be scrapped in favor of an elected board. A citizen petition drive this year came up short of the number of names needed to put the question on the November ballot.
An appointed board at least gives county supervisors the chance to recruit competent school board members who might be willing to serve if asked, as long as they don’t have to go through the hassle of a time-consuming, expensive political campaign.
The recent experience of Buckingham and Cumberland tells us that Prince Edward should leave well enough alone.
