A community resolution

While each of us has considered or adopted resolutions of this year, such as losing weight, stopping smoking or limiting our time on social media, there’s one resolution that we can collectively embrace as a community that will return to us tenfold in 2016.
Let’s all resolve to better support our volunteer fire departments and rescue squads this year.
It’s a simple task that if all of us undertake will make a big impression on Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward counties.
There are numerous, easy ways that we can support these men and women, who put their lives on the line daily to make sure we’re safe and get the care we need during our lowest and most difficult times.
When you read in this paper that the Cartersville Volunteer Rescue Squad is holding bingo, make it a family night and take the quick trip up Route 45 and take part in the activities. When you hear that Prospect Volunteer Fire Department is having a stew or spaghetti supper, take a night off from cooking and grab a plate of food, and make a donation. When you hear of Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department’s barbecue chicken dinner, stop by the firehouse and grab a meal on your way home.
Supporting these men and women is as easy as buying a raffle ticket for a 50/50 drawing that will help a fire department or rescue squad purchase new equipment.
If you’re too busy to attend fundraisers or events the agencies sponsor, make a donation to your local fire department or rescue squad every month. It doesn’t have to be a great deal of money.
This resolution will make the lives for all of us better.
