Lena Mildred Gibboney Horner celebrated her 100th birthday recently with the staff at The Woodland.
Mrs. Horner was born on Nov. 6, 1915, in Fort Gay, W. Va. Her family lived in Wytheville until they moved to Farmville where Mrs. Horner graduated from Farmville High School. She later attended The State Teachers College (now Longwood University) and graduated in 1936. Majoring in education she taught for one year before marrying Jack Horner, now deceased.
The Horners lived in Crewe were she helped with three stepchildren and had eight grandchildren. She worked in the yard office for the Norfolk and Western Railroad and retired after 40 years of service.
After retirement, the Horners purchased a motor home and began traveling.
When asked why she did not continue her teaching Mrs. Horner replied, “You can’t teach children that don’t want to learn.”
She enjoys visits from The Woodland therapy dog, singing and listening to old church hymns and reading the Bible.
