Campbell’s Seth Jones tallied the men’s soccer game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, as the Camels overcame a one goal deficit in the final 19 minutes of the game to record a 3-2 victory over Longwood Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament.

Longwood had a 2-1 lead entering the final 19 minutes of the game, but the lead was evaporated by Isaiah Page’s strike in the 72nd minute.

That set the stage for Jones, who tallied his sixth goal of the season that ended up being the game-winner in the 83rd minute.

“The game slipped from our grasp,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson.

“There is a saying that I abide by that says, ‘If it can be taken from you, than it isn’t yours.’ We have to admit we weren’t good enough on the night and while it was by the finest of margins, it can act as a framework on what we have to improve to become Big South contenders.”

“Best of luck to Campbell. They showed great character coming back and deserved it tonight.”

The Lancers had two shots and two corner kicks to try to generate the game-tying goal in the final minutes, but ultimately the squad was unable to get the tying mark.

Junior goalkeeper Carlos Canas posted eight saves in the contest, while Campbell’s Jeff Kennedy notched four saves for the Camels.

Longwood ends its season at .500 with a 9-9-1 record, marking the most wins for the program in the Big South era and the most since the 2011 campaign.

The nine victories more than doubles the win total from the 2014 squad which captured four victories and fell to top-seeded Coastal Carolina in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament.

“This season was a step in the right direction for the program with some notable results,” Atkinson said.

The game marks the end of a career for Boedie, Zach Crandall, Michael Durr, Zach Corcoran, Carl Carpenter, Will Lambert and Christian Keilty. Those seven seniors plus Sam Yardley has helped the Lancers advance to the Big South Tournament in three of their four seasons and has been part of one Big South semifinal appearance.

“While the pain is still evident, we can hold our heads high and salute our seniors, who have dedicated a good portion of their college life to serve our great program,” Atkinson said.

In a game that featured the top-two goal scorers in the Big South this season in Bradley Farias and Willy Miezan, Farias tallied three points while Miezan scored Longwood’s added his 13th goal of the season.

Daena Bodie opened the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 18th minute to give the Lancers an early 1-0 advantage.

The goal came off a free kick from Dan Campos just outside the left side of the 18-yard box, to mark his sixth assist of the season.

Five minutes later, Farias, the Big South’s leading scorer, tied the score, 1-1, as he received the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and beat Carlos Canas one-on-one. The goal for Farias was his 15th of the season.

Miezan’s strike gave the Lancers a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room.

The scoring play was created off a pass from Finnlay Wyatt and Christian Keilty, before Miezan finished the strike from close range.

The Camels mounted a second-half charge, scoring two unanswered goals in the final 19 minutes.

Page scored his goal, which was assisted by Reafe Anderson, on a counter attack, before Jones scored the game-winner inside the box.

With the loss, the Lancers season ends.
