FARMVILLE — A recent release from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announced a grant award of $23,330 to Lunenburg County Public Schools and Longwood University.
According to the release, the money will go towards Improving Mathematics in Lunenburg County (IMathTLC), a project that will serve 18 teachers. “The awards were made through VDOE’s Mathematics and Science Partnership mini-grant competition which was announced last July. School divisions were encouraged to submit proposals to create partnerships that would provide professional development to teachers,” the release stated.
“The professional development proposals focus on supporting the implementation of the 2009 mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) and the 2010 science SOL,” the release said.
Longwood University and Lunenburg County Public Schools were one of nine partnerships awarded a total of $213,000 in grant money by the VDOE.
According to the VDOE, the partnerships are intended to increase the skills of teachers in the classroom.
In addition to professional development opportunities, the grants also support the development and availability of curriculum and lesson plans.
