LU jumps on opportunity

The Town of Farmville has continued to buzz weeks after Longwood University announced that it will host the only 2016 vice-presidential debate next October. Although this is a great way to put Longwood and Farmville on the map and bring in tons of positive publicity for the school, some important questions remain unanswered.
In Friday’s Farmville Herald, a story about the debate’s likely affecting the Longwood academic calendar quoted a campus email to faculty and staff from President W. Taylor Reveley IV: “We are looking to arrange fall break 2016 to come on the days surrounding the debate so students can participate fully in the many events that will be planned for the days running up to the debate itself.”
Arranging students’ fall break around the event is a smart idea, but what about other debate details such as accommodations for the several thousand journalists wanting to travel to Farmville and cover the event?
The school is rather small for such an event, which is exciting in one aspect since the experience can be shared with the entire community. In another aspect, Willett Hall will be jam-packed with journalists who will also need housing throughout the week and will be producing more traffic than Farmville is used to.
Although housing will be their responsibility, where will all of those reporters stay? Surely all of the hotels will be full in Prince Edward and surrounding counties. Where will they all park for campus activities? Businesses near campus will need their own lots for paying customers and will not have room for reporters just searching for a parking spot in walking distance of campus.
Granted, those businesses will most likely benefit from sales during that week. But, local customers might have a hard time trying to park anywhere near their usual stops.
What about students living on campus who usually stay on campus during fall break? What if they can’t afford to travel home for the break? Will they be allowed to stay? Will they be restricted to what areas they can visit on campus during the week due to the debate and Secret Service agents around?
The debate will all-around be a huge deal for Farmville and the university, however residents will want to know answers to some of these questions.
