Levar Stoney, Virginia’s Secretary of the Commonwealth, is set to deliver the keynote address at the fifth annual Moton Community Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 10.

This year’s event will be held at Longwood University’s Health & Fitness Center from 6-8:30 p.m., according to an event press release.

“The Moton Museum and title sponsors Centra Southside Community Hospital, the county of Prince Edward and Wells Fargo are excited to welcome Stoney, who is the first African-American to be named secretary of the commonwealth and the youngest member of Governor Terry McAuliffe’s Cabinet,” the release stated.

Among the various duties of his position, Stoney assists the governor with the appointments of nearly 4,000 individuals to serve on Virginia’s boards and commissions and the restoration of civil rights to ex-offenders.

Prior to serving as secretary of the commonwealth, Stoney served as the deputy director of the McAuliffe Gubernatorial Transition. He was the deputy campaign manager of McAuliffe’s 2013 campaign for governor. In 2008, he served as executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia.

Each year, the Moton Community Banquet brings together over 500 guests in honor of the Prince Edward County students and families whose courage and sacrifice resulted in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education and 1964 Griffin v. Prince Edward supreme court decisions.
